Yes, it's bad for you. He's gonna gain weight. He's going to have health problems.

Why is that revolting? How is this an actual movie? It should be a funny documentary you see in the high school gym.

What's revolting is the levels this guy goes through in order to sell a movie. Hope he's okay. But anyone could of guessed he would suffer health issues.

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 11:19:40 AM

True. But was there anyone out there with half a brain that though McDonald's was healthy?

Fast Food had a bad rep before this movie came out.

I'm glad they changed their menu. But I don't think they really had to. Their food is what it is.

If you ate at Pink's everyday you would run into the same problem. Should Dairy Queen change their menu too because some guy with time on his hands wants to wage a public war against their "healthy" menu?

It's tasty, fast, not-so-good for you food. Why can't it be just that. Who's gonna eat there everyday except that wacko with the bad haircut?

Because they successfully sell a lot of food they have to change it because it's not as healthy as another restaurant? That's stupid.

Should candy bars change their ingredients too because they cause tooth decay? Maybe people should be responsible for what they put in their mouth...

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 11:50:12 AM

Nonsense. By your own logic we should shut down M&M Mars because their EVIL MONEY MAKING company is selling sugary, tooth decaying snacks. Even targeting minors. Kids and Candy Bars on 60 Minutes.

It's a candy bar. It's got sugar in it. Brush your teeth. Don't eat 10 of them, etc.

It's a hamburger. It's from a fast food restaurant. It's not your backyard BBQ. Don't eat ten of them, you'll be fine.

Responsibility? Don't eat there. They're trying to make a buck. They're not Nature's Answer Sandwich Depot. They're McDonalds.

What about Diet Coke? It's awful for you too.

Be an adult and don't buy it if it's so lousy. But don't ask them to change to suit you. Find another place to eat...! Just because they make a lot of money a whole different set of rules need to apply. Nice. Welcome to America. That would be great and very socially minded. But if they don't want to - then they should HAVE to. Their responsibility is to make money. Let them do it. OR don't. Don't patronize them.

You act like we aren't given a choice. We are somehow forced to eat there and they're trying to slowly poison us. If you find the ingredients not to your liking then go somewhere else. Every person has that choice.

I don't like burritos. Should I petition Taco Bell to make them taste more like Ham Sandwiches?

Bottom Line: If you want change - then you must first change yourself.

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 03:47:12 PM

Selling Crack is evil. But selling fatty hamburgers isn't. It just isn't.

I agree, it's [ the movie ] informative and if it wakes a few people up - good. But I'm so sick of people blaming corporations for their own stupidity and ignorance. It's just a group of people selling stuff. Either buy it or don't.

I always wanted to work for Disney. A long while back I got to help design a new virtual reality theme park with the Imagineers. What could be better? I loved Disney as a kid. Loved Disney World.

Well, the pay was lousy and the art directors were directionless.

I don't work for them anymore.

I still like Disney World.

That's the end of the story. Now I could of been a jack ass and continued to work for them while I lobby'd for change. But the real solution was to just stopping working for them. Worked out great.

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 04:10:04 PM

What an un Heroic thing to say Clark...

BTW, being poor doesn't mean you can't eat healthy. That's stupid. Eating out costs a lot more money than going to the grocery store. I was in better shape and ate better when I was broke than I do now.

Also, every public school teaches about health. They also tell you not to do drugs. Some people don't listen. Whether McDonald's changes or not there are still idiots out there.

So they eat bad food and do drugs.

At some point people need to grow up and take responsibilty for their own actions and stop blamming society for their poor eating habits and their other ridiculous problems.

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 04:25:36 PM

Well... It's like Paramount Pictures marketing a movie. This is a must see!

Since when is advertising media the NY Times? It's called marketing. And sometimes BIG COMPANIES try to make their PRODUCT sound appealing by hyping it. Sometimes COMPANIES and PEOPLE exaggerate....! Weird, huh?

Also, you mentioned, "And also: It's nice that you, Dan, are so well-educated on the subject of nutrition. And that you have enough money to eat more healthfully and go to the gym. But I don't think you're representative of the average American."

Well, last I checked, there are plenty of thin poor people out there without gym memberships.

There are FAT rich, well educated people and there are POOR, uneducated fat people. Just like there are skinny rich and poor. Morgan was wisely focusing on fat people and most of the film shows them so he can better illustrate his point.

Sort of like eating nothing but fast food for two months. Can you imagine?". That's un heroic.

Megan - I sincerely don't think McDonald's PRIDES THEMSELVES ON BEING HEALTHY. They may offer a few items here and there to shut folks like you up but I don't think they take pride in it. Please.

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 04:59:41 PM

No one is saying salute them. I'm saying, an overweight person's problems aren't McDonald's fault. Like every other restaurant, they advertise their food showing happy people enjoying themselves while consuming their product. Does McDonald's do it any different than T.G.I. Friday's? Nope. They're all about the same. If you ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at T.G.I. Friday's you'd gain a ton of weight and you would probably develop health problems.

A fat person generally over eats all the time and finds the tastiest foods to do so with. Whether they're closet eaters at home or out.

McDonald's happens to be a cheap way to eat out and they don't offer very health conscious meals [ like almost all fast food chains are guilty of ]. Should they change the way they do business or should the overweight people [ who would be overweight regardless of whether McDonald's closed their doors tomorrow ] change their PERSONAL business?

I'm saying, stupid or not, take responsibility. If you can't - there are ramifications. That's life. American's are gluttons to some degree. Are we going to be paying more for health care because of fast food restaurants or because we have a gluttonish society. Perhaps a Food Prohibition would solve this nicely, eh? Maybe we can wear collars that shock us every time we want to Super Size - because the media is too powerful to battle against...

Big Corporate America's job isn't to be role models.

I think, and this may be a big stretch for some, the problem with Overweight America may stem more from the way we coddle our citizens and create false social expectations through government and media.

But sure - blame fast food restaurants for the obesity problems. There's the root of the problem. Choice. We need to censor or eliminate choice. There's an answer.

Maybe we can blame Budweiser for alcoholism too.

--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:29:19 PM

Everything should come with a warning label.

Donuts. It would single out members of a particular group and forever deny them rights and protections granted to all other Wisconsin citizens. It would also outlaw civil unions and jeopardize many legal protections for all unmarried couples, whether of the same or the opposite sex. We shouldn’t enshrine this prejudice in our state’s Constitution.”

At the listening session, held at the Village Hall in Paddock Lake, Wisconsin, Feingold also expressed his support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry.

“As I said at the Kenosha County listening session, gay and lesbian couples should be able to marry and have access to the same rights, privileges and benefits that straight couples currently enjoy,” Feingold added. “Denying people this basic American right is the kind of discrimination that has no place in our laws, especially in a progressive state like Wisconsin. The time has come to end this discrimination and the politics of divisiveness that has become part of this issue.”

Feingold noted that removing the prohibition against gay marriage would not impose any obligation on religious groups. He indicated that no religious faith should ever be forced to conduct or recognize any marriage, but that civil laws on marriage should reflect the principle of equal rights under the law.

It's about time the Democrats stepped up to the plate. Yuck. I kept imagining how he must have smelled.

My kneejerk reaction is to immediately stop eating meat. I've been accidentally vegetarian before: when I lived in England, I avoided red meat entirely. Not because I feared mad cow disease, but because I thought the meat there tasted grey and gross. I remember that when I would come home to the States I'd inevitably have some big steak dinner and feel all hopped up and drugged out afterward, like meat was addictive.

The fact that food is addictive was what floored me the most. I mean, on some level, that doesn't surprise me. But cheese, chocolate, and caffeine are my three major food groups, all of them are addictive, and then I wonder why I get weird and compulsive.

Possibly it's just a character flaw. But I blame the food.

Okay, seriously.

I moved to Southern California for one very specific reason: the sunshine.

People think I'm kidding when I say that. I'm really not.

I never liked the seasons very much. You try growing up in a place referred to as the Armpit of the Nation. How do you suppose the Armpit feels in, say, July? Repulsive, that's how. And every year, after suffering through a heavy, humid summer, there would be a spell of nice weather (like, a week) and then boom! The gloomy inevitability of fall. Dark and cold and frozen ground. So after eighteen years in a place that was either brown, hideously bleak, or disgustingly humid, I had had enough. Two weeks in spring and one in fall aren't enough good weather for me.

My first mistake was the south. I can't even talk about it, much less the state of my hair.

Then I tried the U.K. Where it rained every single day for 5 years. If I didn't have seasonal affective disorder before, let me tell you, I do now.

I can't stand the rain. The grey skies. The cloud formations that make me feel as if I am in Seattle (not, let me assure you, a place I wish to live).

What the hell is going on?

Oh, good. Not that it's any different from any other city, just that it's so blatant.

If we need any evidence that we have all failed miserably as human beings, we need look no further than the permanent tent city that sits just a stone's throw from the upwardly-mobile loft-dwelling hipsters who are happy to colonize L.A.'s gritty downtown neighborhoods as long as there's a security guard on duty 24 hours a day.

Not that my hands are clean. I feel surly and rebellious, to tell you the truth, and that's really just too bad because today is another day and, accordingly, another shitload.

Sometimes I miss the silly jobs I used to have. The ones where I could swan in late, faff about all day online, and leave at 4:45, without ever once looking back. I used to specialize in the "job" rather than the "career." Because let's face it, who wants a career? Even locating a career involves a whole lot of self-actualization. And then a whole lot of work, especially if you love what you do. All of this can make a soul-crushing bullshit job seem kind of attractive by comparison.

Well, not that attractive. Beer-goggle attractive at best.

Today I am testing the limits of my Diet Coke addiction. I'm betting all the idiots clad in green and tremendous, asinine hats are feeling a little less exuberant this morning. Was it the delicious sodabread? The impish leprechauns? No, of course it wasn't. It was the excuse to get wasted at 9am and keep it up all day. Obviously, this guy was a tool.

As a rule, I am not a fan of drinking holidays. You can never catch up to that moron who rolled out of bed with his keg, and the fact that you feel an urge to catch up is probably evidence of a drinking problem. Even when I still drank, I hated them.

Erin go blah.

Here's what I don't get.

Opponents of gay marriage who strain credulity by claiming they're not hate-filled homophobes. Because they oppose gay people marrying... why? Has anyone ever set forth an explanation that was slightly more convincing than "my religious documents say so, and despite the fact we live in a country which (hilariously) was set up to make sure no one was persecuted based on other people's religious ideas, I feel MY religious ideas should be encoded, nay, ENSHRINED in law"? No, they have not. Because they are small, scared bigots.

And anti-abortion activists. What is wrong with these people? Let me see if I follow the thinking here. These people think that unborn fetuses are more important than already born women. They feel that abortion is murder and if you find yourself saddled with an unwanted pregnancy, you should suck it up and deal, you big whore, because that's what you get for having sex. (I can't even discuss the waste of DNA Napoli, and his vile comments.) However, no one is suggesting that anyone prosecute women who abort their fetuses as murderers. How can this be? Oh, right, because it's not murder. They just want to control and punish women. Business as usual, then.

And our government. The lies are so over-the-top I almost believe this is some kind of sociological experiment. Wake up, people! There was a coup in 2000 and you all just lay down and took it! And then went back for more!

Sometimes it is a challenge to get up every morning in these United States. Seriously.

This is a bedbug.

Kind of brings new meaning to that "don't let the bedbugs bite" thing my mom used to say. Sometimes I'm not as thrilled with my career as I pretend to be. Sometimes I wish I had other marketable skills.

And this is where I can discuss it in the approved 21st century manner: by flinging it out into the mess of cyberspace without using my name.
