Oh, good.
Once again Dan has contributed to the group discourse by "taking his ball and going home." It's becoming a habit!
For reference, then, let me present his deleted posts in their entirety (thanks to the digital age we live in, and Blogger's comment features).
(Don't worry that you can't read them in context. They don't have much to do with the context.)
In chronological order, complete with date stamp:
Food is addictive? It's funny, because whenever I'm hungry - the very first thing I want is food.
How about all things in moderation.
Why eat a shit load of fast food? Yes, it's bad for you. That shocks anyone?
If all you ate were apples for a month you would probably have health problems.

Everyone who watches that movie and is flabbergasted by what happens to him.
It's a no brainer. He's gonna gain weight. He's going to have health problems.
Why is that revolting? How is this an actual movie? It should be a funny documentary you see in the high school gym.
What's revolting is the levels this guy goes through in order to sell a movie. Hope he's okay. But anyone could of guessed he would suffer health issues.

True. But was there anyone out there with half a brain that though McDonald's was healthy?
Fast Food had a bad rep before this movie came out.
I'm glad they changed their menu. But I don't think they really had to. Their food is what it is.
If you ate at Pink's everyday you would run into the same problem. Should Dairy Queen change their menu too because some guy with time on his hands wants to wage a public war against their "healthy" menu?
It's tasty, fast, not-so-good for you food. Why can't it be just that. Who's gonna eat there everyday except that wacko with the bad haircut?
Because they successfully sell a lot of food they have to change it because it's not as healthy as another restaurant? That's stupid.
Should candy bars change their ingredients too because they cause tooth decay? Maybe people should be responsible for what they put in their mouth...

Nonsense. By your own logic we should shut down M&M Mars because their EVIL MONEY MAKING company is selling sugary, tooth decaying snacks. Even targeting minors. Kids and Candy Bars on 60 Minutes.
It's a candy bar. It's got sugar in it. Brush your teeth. Don't eat 10 of them, etc.
It's a hamburger. It's from a fast food restaurant. It's not your backyard BBQ. Don't eat ten of them, you'll be fine.
Responsibility? Don't eat there. They're trying to make a buck. They're not Nature's Answer Sandwich Depot. They're McDonalds.
What about Diet Coke? It's awful for you too.
Be an adult and don't buy it if it's so lousy. But don't ask them to change to suit you. Find another place to eat...! Just because they make a lot of money a whole different set of rules need to apply. Nice. Welcome to America. Let's have the government step in.
Wake up.

I'm going to go get some coffee and when I return and find you aren't completely convinced I'm right and you're wrong - you're really going to be in for it.

It would be nice if big bad corporations donated money to the homeless also. That would be great and very socially minded. But if they don't want to - then they should HAVE to. Their responsibility is to make money. Let them do it. OR don't. Don't patronize them.
You act like we aren't given a choice. We are somehow forced to eat there and they're trying to slowly poison us. If you find the ingredients not to your liking then go somewhere else. Every person has that choice.
I don't like burritos. Should I petition Taco Bell to make them taste more like Ham Sandwiches?
Bottom Line: If you want change - then you must first change yourself.

Selling Crack is evil. But selling fatty hamburgers isn't. It just isn't.
I agree, it's [ the movie ] informative and if it wakes a few people up - good. But I'm so sick of people blaming corporations for their own stupidity and ignorance. It's just a group of people selling stuff. Either buy it or don't.
I always wanted to work for Disney. A long while back I got to help design a new virtual reality theme park with the Imagineers. What could be better? I loved Disney as a kid. Loved Disney World.
Well, the pay was lousy and the art directors were directionless.
I don't work for them anymore.
I still like Disney World.
That's the end of the story. Now I could of been a jack ass and continued to work for them while I lobby'd for change. But the real solution was to just stopping working for them. Worked out great.

What an un Heroic thing to say Clark...
BTW, being poor doesn't mean you can't eat healthy. That's stupid. Eating out costs a lot more money than going to the grocery store. I was in better shape and ate better when I was broke than I do now.
Also, every public school teaches about health. They also tell you not to do drugs. Some people don't listen. Whether McDonald's changes or not there are still idiots out there.
So they eat bad food and do drugs.
At some point people need to grow up and take responsibilty for their own actions and stop blamming society for their poor eating habits and their other ridiculous problems.

Well... It's not Health Food. It is what it is. A cheeseburger every now and then from McDonald's isn't going to set you up for health problems though.

If I'm selling food, Megan, of course I'm going to say it's tasty and good. It's like Paramount Pictures marketing a movie. This is a must see!
Since when is advertising media the NY Times? It's called marketing. And sometimes BIG COMPANIES try to make their PRODUCT sound appealing by hyping it. Sometimes COMPANIES and PEOPLE exaggerate....! Weird, huh?
Also, you mentioned, "And also: It's nice that you, Dan, are so well-educated on the subject of nutrition. And that you have enough money to eat more healthfully and go to the gym. But I don't think you're representative of the average American."
Well, last I checked, there are plenty of thin poor people out there without gym memberships.
There are FAT rich, well educated people and there are POOR, uneducated fat people. Just like there are skinny rich and poor. Morgan was wisely focusing on fat people and most of the film shows them so he can better illustrate his point.
Sort of like eating nothing but fast food for two months. Like that's normal anywhere...

Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/05/2006 04:55:41 PM
Norm - why are you preparing unhealthy food at home at any cost?
Clark - I'm mentioning your dig,"God I hope Dan's not representative of the average American. Can you imagine?". That's un heroic.
Megan - I sincerely don't think McDonald's PRIDES THEMSELVES ON BEING HEALTHY. They may offer a few items here and there to shut folks like you up but I don't think they take pride in it. Please.

No one is saying salute them. I'm saying, an overweight person's problems aren't McDonald's fault. Like every other restaurant, they advertise their food showing happy people enjoying themselves while consuming their product. Does McDonald's do it any different than T.G.I. Friday's? Nope. They're all about the same. If you ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at T.G.I. Friday's you'd gain a ton of weight and you would probably develop health problems.
A fat person generally over eats all the time and finds the tastiest foods to do so with. Whether they're closet eaters at home or out.
McDonald's happens to be a cheap way to eat out and they don't offer very health conscious meals [ like almost all fast food chains are guilty of ]. Should they change the way they do business or should the overweight people [ who would be overweight regardless of whether McDonald's closed their doors tomorrow ] change their PERSONAL business?
I'm saying, stupid or not, take responsibility. If you can't - there are ramifications. That's life. American's are gluttons to some degree. Are we going to be paying more for health care because of fast food restaurants or because we have a gluttonish society. Perhaps a Food Prohibition would solve this nicely, eh? Maybe we can wear collars that shock us every time we want to Super Size - because the media is too powerful to battle against...
Big Corporate America's job isn't to be role models.
I think, and this may be a big stretch for some, the problem with Overweight America may stem more from the way we coddle our citizens and create false social expectations through government and media.
But sure - blame fast food restaurants for the obesity problems. There's the root of the problem. Choice. We need to censor or eliminate choice. There's an answer.
Maybe we can blame Budweiser for alcoholism too.

Everything should come with a warning label.
Donuts. Bubble gum. Candy bars. It all contains sugar, right?
Or maybe no advertising for cookies. At least a big warning label!!!
Censor food!!! Censor food!!!

Hi. News flash! Greasy food isn't Crack.
It just isn't.
It's greasy. Just like a most diners.
--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:44:20 PM
Really? A lot like Crack...
Okay.
So warning labels for everything because tasty food is a lot like crack and even though tasty food exists every where in the world - we're too stupid to stop over eating.
--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:49:09 PM
You're right. You're suggesting McDonald's use a portion of their profit to tell consumers to buy less of their product... Brilliant. That's gonna happen.
--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:50:49 PM
Where does that end? Because every diner across America serves food just as bad for you. Most restaurants don't serve healthy food.
--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:52:07 PM
Then what exactly are you saying? You're saying they need to take responsibility for themselves? How then?
--
Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:52:43 PM
Where did I say "crack is evil"? Make it legal. Maybe a bunch of idiots will O.D. and there'll be less mornons breathing my air.

Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 05:53:45 PM
People who eat at McDonald's are "victims". That's a bit of a strecth, don't you think?

Tell me your big solution

Fine. I changed my mind. Now I say sell it.
But what's your big solve?

I agree with Remo to some degree. That movie broadens our awareness and gives us pause.
BUT, they had TONS of junk food in my cafeteria. All the food was pretty bad for you. Somehow I managed to weigh 135 until I was a Senior in high school.

Rapp: I don't think labels on the cigerettes changed people's views on smoking. It may have helped in some insignificant way. I think what helped were programs and counter media that informed the public that smoking gives you cancer. Newspapers and media reporting the coralation between smoking and cancer opened people's eyes.

Posted by UrbanBarbarian to anonymouseverafter at 4/06/2006 06:04:31 PM
I liked it well enough. But I don't think it's McD's [ or any corporation ] responsibilty to inform people that TOO much of their product will harm you. Too many eggs will harm you.
Programs and parents should inform their fatty kids that too much of anything is bad for you.
Except blogging.

Do you know what I like about this group of friends? They love to yap about what's wrong politically or otherwise but do zero to really help.
How about you crazy kids actually petition or something for one the many problems you find in our country or with horrible corporate America?
Are any of you politically active in any way?

I'm still anxious for this "solve" of yours Ms Thing.

A lot of arm chair politicians in this little group.
We live in one of the few countries where if you unite you can make a difference.
If it's not too personal [ and I respect your right to privacy ] how exactly are you politically active?

Remo,
Free Speech is great. Doing something is something else entirely.
Majoring in PS is also great. But unless you actually do something with your knowledge [ which you hint that you do ]than it's really moot.
BTW, I'm not attacking in a desparate manner. I've asked Megan several times now what her solve is. No one seems to have one. All I hear is that McDonald's should be more socially minded or something.
And I my "political" comment is something that I've found amusing about this group for some time. Pontificating about "what should be" and so on but I've never heard squat about really doing much at all over the years.
I call that arm chair politics. Degree or no degree. Just my POV.
Inform me of your political deeds and I'll shut up right away.

Well there you go. Very good. At least you're doing something with your degree. That's great. I never knew. I'm impressed and proud [ all kidding aside ] that you're not all talk.
So, what should be done about obesity in America. Please tell me happily.

Where were you 67 Blog Comments ago? I could of used a guy like you.
So... I couldn't help but notice there was no mention of making McD provide the good people of Happy Town, USA with "don't buy too much of our food, it will kill you" statements.
I am pleased. Take that Bloggers.
Educate the masses is the best solve, IMO.

Listen, if it wasn't for me we'd just have Clark posting song lyrics and telling us about the cashier at Von's gave him a nickel. I really think you should rethink this job of yours. If it takes you away from Blogging, really - what kind of job is it?
Think about that today.
